TEMPLE GUITING MANOR

Enchanting Manor Houses in The Cotswolds

Located in the serene Cotswolds, a scenic Tudor house stands proud, enchanting all with its 13th-century charm. Renowned as one of the most opulent Tudor houses in the area, its glory even caught Prince Charles' attention, who graced an awards ceremony held within its historic walls. A testament to this royal visit hangs on the window sill – an official letter from Charles' private secretary, framed to honour the event.

The manor's extensive garden, restored meticulously, was a particular favourite of HRH. With its perfect illusion of an endless lawn plummeting into open space, the garden frames the quintessentially British countryside wonderfully, its manicured trees, shrubs, and flower-filled walkways producing rustic artwork that never fails to impress.

Once inside, the mansion’s distinctively furnished social spaces welcome you. There are three individual living rooms, each featuring a unique interior, from the airy, light-filled space often used for leisurely massages, to the cozy hideaway at the lower-level snug, and finally the charming antique lounge sporting beams, cozy blankets, and a wood-burner. The larger, high-ceilinged room serves as both a dining and game room, complete with a suit of armour, standing tall and grand. The multi-level kitchen leads you in with its warm, under-floor heating, fully stocked with an impressive collection of glassware.

The mansion's decor is evocative, a tribute to its rich tapestry of a long-gone era. Authentic wooden furniture, luxurious sofas, and countless books fill every corner, reminding you of the house's history. Art collected from global galleries, auctions, and markets decorate the walls, each piece holding a story of its own. Be sure to spot the neo-impressionist French artwork by Blanche Augustine Camus and Chris Levine's exclusive 'Lightness of Being' which intriguingly features a closed-eyed Queen.

This mansion’s charm does not end here. You will be led to converted dovecotes, ideal to showcase when your dinner guests least expect it. One hides a secret cinema while the other houses a Swedish-style hot tub, continuously bubbling, ready to comfort. Afterwards, meet for a game of ping pong or a quick swim in the heated pool. Amidst all the fun, this house's intricate layout may bewilder some with its maze-like stairways and walkways - a delightful challenge for the guests occupying the regal bedrooms spread on the upper floors

Dinham Weir House Shropshire

DINHAM WEIR HOUSE

Experience Luxury at Ludlow, Shropshire

The majestic Dinham Weir House, nestled in Ludlow, Shropshire, stands as a testimony to the town's gastronomic history. Known for a decade and a half as Mr Underhill's, it was a coveted Michelin-starred restaurant run by the dynamic duo, Chris and Judy Bradley. This celebrated restaurant served innovative dishes like fish veloute with marmalade ice cream and revamped sausage rolls, creating a loyal fanbase, including many serious food enthusiasts. Enjoying amuse-bouches in the fragrant lavender garden, watching vibrant kingfishers streak across the River Teme, was a part of this foodie's nirvana. However, the culinary landmark's future became uncertain when the Bradleys retired in 2015.

In 2018, the property welcomed a new chapter under the vivacious stewardship of Jude Hunt, also the co-operator of Redford Farm Barns near Ludlow. Jude, along with her husband Rupert and their creative associate, Ed Godrich, maintained the original layout of the mansion — five bedrooms in the primary house and an additional room in the Mill House upon the garage. However, they introduced innovative additions, like a brightly-colored bar, a playful den for all ages adorned with storybook illustrations and original artworks, and a breath of whimsical charm. The mansion continues to pay homage to its gastronomic past by hosting a range of chefs and writers during Ludlow’s annual food festival in September. Guests staying here can savor the delights from CSons café next door, local deli Harp Lane, and emerging chef Harry Bullock, all delivered right at their doorstep.

If you're planning a family reunion or a birthday surprise, this mansion provides a perfect setting — experience the joy of stirring cocktails in the picturesque garden, glide in kayaks among graceful swans, indulge in swimming by the weir, or wander around the historical Norman castle. Explore the ancient woods, embark on a venture into Shropshire’s untamed hills, or soak in the ambiance of one of England’s charming market towns. The Dinham Weir House serves as an extraordinary retreat in a unique corner of the country.

Dom St John East Sussex

Dom St John

The Charms of East Sussex

Just a stone's throw away from the high street of Rye, nestled within a secluded Georgian courtyard, resides a stunning reinterpretation of a 1950s St John Ambulance station. This transformed space is the brainchild of world-renowned interior architect Marta Nowicka, whose distinct and striking properties can be found scattered across the globe in cities such as New York, Warsaw, and London. (For those interested, her website - 'Dom' meaning 'house' in Polish - showcases these architectural gems.) East Sussex boasts one of her spectacular creations which has been meticulously designed considering every little detail to stand as an elegant and minimalistic family haven.

An inviting atmosphere is created by the reflection of light off the thick grey limed oak flooring throughout this uniquely floor-plan house. The dining table, crafted from salvaged beach timber, adds to the authenticity of the place while the aluminium kitchen island pays homage to the building's medical past. Ascend upstairs, and a repurposed nurse's trolley cleverly serves as a bathroom sink unit. The exposed brick walls bring coziness and vibrance to an otherwise neutral palette. The home effortlessly melds industial elements into one cohesive, comfortably living space.

The spacious master bedroom is stationed at the end of the house, offering picturesque views of Rye through a dramatically shaped triangular window. And the room with two single beds, ingeniously equipped with pull-out sections, proves to be a fantastic kids' dormitory. Double-sided wood burner and a firepit just outside make it a perfect place to gather after a full day exploring the nearby beaches.

The building is poignantly reimagined, blurring the line between historical heritage and modern living - an exciting weekend retreat.

Forter Castle Perthshire

Forter Castle

The Enchanting Perthshire

Discover the charm of the Scottish Highlands within the confinements of a castle located in Perthshire. Situated at the heart of the highlands, the spectacular view of Glenisla serves as your royal panorama. About an hour's drive to the north of Perth, the castle brims with legends of mighty giants who were notorious for tossing stones. The dilapidated castle was restored to glory by the Pooley family after they purchased it from the Earl of Airlie in 1988. The three centuries old castle, torched by the warring Argyll clan, was resurrected, with each brick meticulously laid back in its place. Katherine Pooley, an esteemed interior designer, breathed life into the rooms with her unique touches including cast-iron chandeliers, antler-made candlesticks, and sofas dressed in traditional tweed and tartan. Cut-crystal decanters filled with whisky are conveniently stationed beside every bed. The grandiose Laird's Room boasts a massive four-poster bed, robust enough that it had to be transported in two parts and reassembled on site. The kids' quarters are located further up in the attic, equipped with an ingenious collection of costumery. The stone fortress also hides a modern kitchen within its dungeon and houses a chapel that could accommodate ten guests, once chosen as the wedding spot of Mick Hucknell, the frontman of Simply Red. Daytime passes in thrill and excitement, with an optional traditional wake-up call by bagpiper Stuart Wilkie who has previously performed for the Royal Family at Balmoral. Local sensation, Charles Crombie is available for organising a day filled with Highland Games in the gardens – archery, air-rifle practice, cross-bowing and even axe-throwing. Considering the closest shop is half an hour drive away, a mention must be made about chef Peter Backhouse, who along with his wife, Fiona, puts together scrumptious meals of Angus beef fillet or Tay-caught smoked salmon in the Great Hall, beneath a ceiling which encapsulates the tale of the Bonnie House of Airlie.

Heathfield House Hampshire

Heathfield House Estate

The Majestic Heathfield House of Hampshire

Heathfield House, an architectural marvel in Hampshire, bore a forgettable past when it was acquired by Jackie and Mener Tsitsis in 2014. Previously dissembled into seven distinct units and bereft of its unique fireplaces and windows, its former elegance was a mere shadow of its past. It was once the grand dwelling of Lady Emma Bingham, the spouse of Sir George, who is historically remembered as Napoleon's captor in St Helena. The enigmatic inscription 'Dieu Ayde' translates to 'God assists', presides over the entrance of the house, engraved within the stone, evoking the divine.

In an interesting turn of events, the Tsitsis discovered a vintage 1920s postcard on eBay depicting the home, which served as the blueprint for an ambitious restoration. This included the revival of the iron-clad sun-trap veranda sprawled across the southern facade of the building. The home's interior is now adorned by an extensive collection of over 100 unique art pieces, diligently curated by Mener, offering an expressive and vivacious contrast to the otherwise neutral palates of the rooms.

The extensive art collection includes a myriad of styles and genres; the walls of the main hall fiercely guarded by a John Bischoff's imposing abstract canvas. Audacious pop-art illustrations by Albert Louden reside atop one of the stair landings. Around the dwelling’s twelve bedrooms, visitors can find a sundry of artistic expressions encompassing nudity, landscapes and botanical themes. Beyond the artistic resplendence, the house is embellished with subtle touches; Heathfield-emblazoned aprons hanging jauntily on the coatstand in the hallway, aromatic Hampshire potions with notes of mint, lime and lemongrass from New Forest Aromatics in the bathrooms and a gold-plated drinks trolley featuring a choice selection of gin accompanied by a bowlful of fresh lemons in the dining area.

In the colder months, the cosy cinema room invites guests to nestle into its plush corduroy sofas, gin and tonic in hand. Summertime unveils a variety of traditional garden games like croquet, giant Connect Four, and rounders, inviting visitors of all ages to indulge in some fun. The house is ideally suited for larger gatherings, while smaller groups or families can opt for the idyllic Coach House (consists of four bedrooms) or the quaint Magnolia Cottage (two bedrooms) nestled in the lush 15-acre property landscape.

The grand Heathfield House is located at Lyndhurst Road, Bransgore, Hampshire, BH23 8LA and can be contacted through the telephone number +44 1425 880009. Gatsby Somerset

Gatsby

The Somerset Haven: Wincanton

One cannot help but feel a rush of anticipation as they traverse the driveway towards the seemingly hidden abode known as Gatsby. As you meander through the thick hedges, a gap in the growth teases a glimpse of the grandeur that is to come before you're welcomed by a stately oak entrance embedded in mellow stone. Sophie Hale, renowned designer of fashion and interiors, along with her husband Roland, are the proud owners of this Grade I-listed treasure near Wincanton since 2010. The manor holds a rich history with parts of the architecture dating back to the Jacobean era while the rest bear the stamp of the Georgian period. With Award-winning architect, Ptolemy Dean helming the restoration project, it's no surprise that the house scooped an accolade from The Georgian Group, an honour announced at The RIBA in London.

A fusion of the old and new stands at the heart of Gatsby's charm. Flagstones once hid beneath layers of paint, have been stripped and lifted to accommodate underfloor heating. Historical elements such as wattle and daub were returned to their former glory while rotund mahogany curtain rods found life again after being saved from roofspaces swathed in cobwebs. True to its heritage, the residence flawlessly transitions between two distinct centuries. The elegance of 18th-century sophistication joyously mingles with cosy enclaves that boast beams and mullions — features that predate the rest of the home by at least a hundred years. With the formidable skillsets of Hale and Dean combined, Gatsby stands proud, a testament to architectural feat, exuding grace, style, and homeliness in equal measures.

The bathrooms echo a Moroccan charm accentuated with bespoke tiles while the total of eight bedrooms in the main mansion combine the soft palettes from Robert Kime and Lewis & Wood, adding to Gatsby's eye-delecting experience. Behind an inconspicuous cupboard door lies a private cinema, and the house honours history in the most artistic way with a portrait of George I guarding the primary staircase and other art pieces adding character to the kitchen. The sprawling outdoor space captivates visitors with its lake era framed by bulrushes, a tennis court, an outdoor pool, and a terrace adorned with agapanthus and valerian, thanks to the expertise of garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith. The outbuildings aren't merely aesthetic; they now serve as a four-bedroom cottage, a gym, games, and steam rooms. Gatsby offers such vastness that one can't help but feel like they've stumbled upon their personal, intimate hamlet.

Soho Farmhouse

Soho Farmhouse

Discover Great Tew, Oxfordshire

Imagine sipping cocktails delivered by a delightful milk-float, as you laze on your deck overlooking the lake. Welcome to Soho House's country annex, which launched with much enthusiasm previous summer. In the heart of this retreat lies an overlooked gem, a stately seven-bedroom farmhouse from the 18th century, exuding a distinct rustic allure rather than fading into obscurity amidst the modern amenities. One of the two authentic edifices to stand its ground on this estate, the farmhouse conserves the sweet nostalgia of a bygone era despite its proximity to a realm boasting a variety of restaurants, a spa, cinema, indoor-outdoor pool, and a boating lake.

The traditional aesthetics are intact -- the creaking wooden floors cloaked in worn kilims, the bare rough stone walls, and the massive ceiling beams overhead. Staying true to its roots, the home is adorned with antiques and unique Robert Kime wallpapers that retain their individuality and evade the cliché trap. Modern conveniences are subtly merged with heritage elements, like frilled lightshades mounted over Arts-and-Crafts furniture in the dining room, contending pleasantly with institutional radiators and adaptable lamps. A place where powered entertainment gadgets give way to organic merriment, you'll find the aura of this spot, located in the estate's bustling heart, rather conducive to a thrilling party atmosphere. It's clear that this place, devoid of child-related anomalies, is tailored carefully for adults, an enclave for mature retreats.

Gaining access might be challenging due to its popularity, especially for non-members of Soho House, hence it's advisable to make reservations well in advance.

Ty Fforest

Ty Fforest

Enlivening an Antiquity in Cardigan, Wales

Picture a child's sketch of a farmhouse - sturdy, warmly inviting with its eggshell-white exterior and boastful chimneys. That's the external charm of this abode. Venture inside, and you're welcomed by the stylish flair of a Nordic ski chalet, showcasing pine wall panelling and intricately handcrafted rugs. Despite having stood for several centuries, the dwelling was unoccupied and desolate for a quarter of a century, its sole decoration being bat deposits. 'This place was possessed by the ghost of neglect', recounts James Lynch, the owner and ingenious creator, who revitalized it together with his partner, Sian. They lovingly restored quirky elements such as worn stair steps and beam ends, preserved a curing basin and smoking hooks, and rejuvenated the structure with beeswaxed plaster walls and lime repointing.

Art and interior design blend seamlessly within this farmhouse. A room hosts a Peter Doig painting, while some furniture incorporates planks painted by Hirst, Emin and others, invoking Lynch's vibrant history in Hoxton. Versatile Presbyterian pews in the sitting room transform swiftly into a home theatre. The generous kitchen with its dining nook envelopes an incredibly large inglenook. The narrow bunkroom, reminiscent of a marine vessel's cabin, stands as a charming retreat for children. Each of the four secluded bedrooms comes with an en-suite bathroom - the ones upfront offering a quaint vista of the village church resembling a scene right from a Miss Marple mystery.

This farmhouse forms part of the rustic Fforest empire, which also extends to avant-garde camping domes and a plethora of leisure activities. Lynch's vision allows guests to customize their experience – kayaking along the River Teifi, savoring barbecues at the lodge, sampling craft ales at the dainty pub, or simply basking in the leisurely country life charm. For a delectable dinner, reach out to Sian and her team, or opt to gather mussels from the nearby coast at low tide for a fresh maritime extravaganza.

42 Acres

42 Acres

Charming Somerset Retreat: Witham Friary

Renowned interior designer Jo Berryman, who famously gave us The Folly, a plush Cotswolds cottage lined with beams of rough hewn wood, flagstone floors tastefully highlighted with brass accents, high-quality velvet throws and antique fixtures brought straight from France, brings her unique vision to another project. With a backdrop of her storied past - including her marriage to a Coldplay band member, she is now showcasing a more organic approach to interior design. The result is 42 Acres, a Victorian manor nestled within a sprawling woodland, owned by local residents Lara and Seth Tabatznik. Collaborating with Berryman, the siblings have converted the historical residence into a fashionable haven for urban bohemians seeking new-age allure.

In comparison to The Folly, 42 Acres carries a decidedly earthy tone - an homage to its secondary function as a venue for mindfulness retreats. The interior is effused with calming tones of light pink, lavender and taupe, cleverly contrasted against the vibrant hues of Moroccan wedding blankets, Beni Ourain rugs and sheepskin throws. Offering a selection of relaxation spaces, 42 Acres features private kitchens styled in mid-century modern aesthetics, a tranquil yoga space with a terrace view, and a cozy library marked with a neon sign from God's Own Junkyard. Sustainability is a core principle of the estate, evidenced by its biomass boilers, tables made from locally sourced oak, and the ample wilderness that surrounds the property. Perfect for those seeking spiritual solace rather than raucous parties, 42 Acres provides an idyllic locale to unwind and find balance.

Brocket Hall Hertfordshire

Brocket Hall

The Grandeur of Welwyn, Hertfordshire

Embark on a journey to uncover tales etched in time at the majestic 18th-century estate nestled in the heart of the peaceful countryside, just a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of London. Brocket Hall, which sits a mere twenty miles outside London was once home to the UK Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, whose mortal life concluded in a peculiar circumstance involving a billiard table and a maid. His predecessor, Lord Melbourne who was also a Prime Minister, lived here too and was a favourite of the very young Queen Victoria. Melbourne's spouse, known for her scandalous affairs with Lord Byron, also spent considerable years at this elegant manor. Brocket Hall is no stranger to controversies, with the current Lord Brocket infamously having spent five years in prison in the 90s for pretending to be robbed of his classic Ferraris which he had actually buried on the property grounds.

In this era, the halls resonate not with scandal but with the gentle tapping of golf clubs and croquet mallets. Having seen almost 250 years of occupation by its private owners, the 30-bedroom mansion is now open for public bookings for exclusive parties and events. The Lord Melbourne Suite offers the most luxurious and serene view of the parkland and lake, perfect for a regal stay. For a more modest stay, one can opt for the Melbourne Lodge, a charming Georgian coach-house conversion which boasts cosy ensuite rooms.

One of the famous attractions at the Hall is the double AA Rosette-winning Auberge du Lac restaurant. Here, you can enjoy a carefully crafted tasting menu in an adorable inn by a quaint lake. If the estate strangely seems like one you have seen on screen, it is because it indeed was. The famous series 'The Crown' used Brocket Hall to represent a royal residence in the fourth season.

Godolphin House

The Historic Enchantment of Godolphin House, Helston, Cornwall

Nestled at the leafy terminus of a private lane, the majesty of Godolphin House unfurls before your eyes, bathed radiantly in sunlight. The driveway, with its simplistic circular design, hints at the grandeur of the architectural behemoth beyond - an opulent house born of the 17th century, boasting an awe-inspiring grey-stone facade marked by a succession of Italianate columns. Its beauty lies in its stature and unique aesthetic appeal: it's a monument of history, not a conventional pretty sight. The encompassing woodlands veil this historic relic in a secluded domain of Cornwall, exuding an air of sacred mystery. Our trip from Penzance station, a reasonably short distance that took us little over 20 minutes, took us through serpentine narrow lanes to this historic mansion, which is now open for renting for the first time.

In an effort to preserve its historical integrity, the National Trust purchased the 550-acre estate in 2000 from the Schofield family, allowing them to retain the house and 40 acres. Mary Schofield, the last resident and a member of the family, resided here until a ripe age, well into her nineties. The fear of auxiliary structures being sold off to profit-oriented investors prompted the Trust to step up when the house went on sale in 2007. Subsequently, nearly a million pounds have been invested in maintenance and preservation works, leading to the current state of the property.

Godolphin House's imposing and reserved facade, adorned by a colossal wooden front door under its pillared portico, does not do justice to its sheer grandeur. It opens up to a courtyard, partly enclosed by the ruinous wall of what used to be a medieval Great Hall, its windows consumed by time, presently hosting vines and creepers. Inside the house, six spacious bedrooms, numerous bathrooms, an exquisitely panelled dining room, a comfortable sitting area, and a grand drawing room signify luxury. The property even features a kitchen that opens up to a private garden hosting a long table and chairs, ensconced in the ruins of the past Great Hall; they create a harmonious mix of past and present. The vast structure is segmented into different wings, accessible through two staircases, one leading to the 'new house' dating back to 1475 and the other to the 17th-century North Front.

Furthermore, the estate houses 16th-century renovated horse stables and a repurposed piggery, now a well-kept visitors' reception. The fence of the pre-Renaissance Side Garden, running alongside a 200-year-old box hedge, adds to the property's rustic charm, as does the walled King's Garden, named after a visit in 1646 by the then Prince of Wales, Charles II. The house truly shines after 4pm when the place is left for sole enjoyment by the residents. The vastness of the house ensures ample space, even when accommodating the maximum limit of 12 guests.

Throughout the year, Godolphin House offers a unique experience – from spring blooms to winter tranquillity when prices dip alongside the temperature. The house features modern amenities like a state-of-the-art heating system and large fireplaces to stay cozy in winter. It is truly a compelling piece of history that anyone would be thrilled to experience.
